EARLY BIRD RATES TILL APRIL 1!

lllustrators (and writers who appreciate the magic of artwork in picture books) will enjoy an all-day encounter with award-winning “artistrator” E.B. Lewis, and celebrated author/illustrators, Matt Faulkner and Leslie Helakoski. Our day  of intensive study of children’s book art will investigate “the hook” – that special point in a book where the reader is compelled to keep reading. For editors, librarians, teachers, parents, and children, the hook is what pulls us in, what keeps us reading, and what remains with us after the last page is turned. This one-day conference will explore the hook of the book from many angles, and you will leave with ideas on how to improve your art and writing and make your work stand out in this ever-more-competitive field.

Lewis, who has illustrated and/or written over 60 books, will lead us through formal and informal instruction and critiques, designed to change how we SEE. We’ll have a few others surprises for attendees as well; more details to follow soon.

E.B. Lewis won the Caldecott Honor for “Coming on Home Soon,” written by Jacqueline Woodson. His books have won several Coretta Scott King Illustrator Awards, ALA Notable Book awards, and other honors. His fine art is collected and displayed in galleries across the nation. He is a master at identifying the emotion and story in text and showing it in the illustration.

Lewis taught art in public school for twelve years, continues to teach at the University of Arts in Philadelphia, and privately mentors illustration students. No matter what level of mastery an artist has achieved, Lewis can help to push the craft higher.

Our Hook of the Book illustrator day will be held at Thomson-Shore, a 100% employee-owned book publisher, printer, and distributor located in Dexter, Michigan.

Thomson-Shore lies 18 minutes west of the heart of Ann Arbor, an hour and a half east of Kalamazoo, and 2 hours from central Grand Rapids.

Shutta’s Annual Scholarship to the SCBWI Winter Conference in NY!

Shutta’s Annual Scholarship to the SCBWI Winter Conference in NY!

Shutta’s Scholarship Solution to the (upcoming) Winter Doldrums is Here Again!

If you are interested in attending the annual SCBWI Winter Conference in New York City but feel you can’t afford it—think again! With a little help you might find yourself at the Grand Hyatt in NY on a blustery wintry day. (Provided you are a member of the Michigan Chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.)

For the fourth year in row, I am renewing my offer to pay the full early-bird registration fee for a Michigan SCBWI member to attend. The qualifying rules are listed on the application form which will be posted on the MichKids SCBWI website and is now at my site off the “For Writer’s” page.

The conference is Feb. 21-23, 2014 and registration does not open until mid-October. See the national SCBWI site at: http://www.scbwi.org for details about the conference. But start getting your chicks in line, now, to apply. You never know what magical thing might happen to you there!

Kelly Barson, last year’s winner said: “Ever since I joined SCBWI, I’ve wanted to attend a national conference. The timing seemed perfect for 2012, but my bank account disagreed. Shutta’s generous scholarship made my dream trip a reality.”

Any questions, feel free to contact me (below by replying to this post), or at my Contact Me page.

Dream Big!
